PT Pulse - Article 9 - Beat the Chill: Safe and Effective Ways to Stay Active During the Winter Months

Introduction:

As the temperatures continue to drop (and rise?? - crazy weather) and the days, while getting longer still feel so short, the temptation to hibernate indoors can be strong. However, staying active in the winter months is not only possible but essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In this post, we'll explore safe and effective options for exercise that will keep you moving and motivated during the colder season.

1. Embrace Winter Sports:

Winter offers a unique set of sports

and activities that can turn the chilly weather into an opportunity for fun and fitness. Consider taking up activities like XC or downhill skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, or snowshoeing (that is if we get any decent snow accumulation!). These activities not only provide an excellent cardiovascular workout but also allow you to enjoy the winter wonderland around you.

2. Indoor Workouts:

For those who prefer to stay warm indoors, there are plenty of effective workouts that can be done in the comfort of your home. Invest in simple equipment like resistance bands, dumbbells, or a stability ball to enhance your indoor workouts. Take advantage of free YouTube channels from the comfort of your own living livingroom, for home strengthening, yoga, or pilates workouts. If you are really feeling motivated try a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) session (also YouTube) that will quickly help you break a sweat without stepping outside.

3. Walk or Hike Safely:

Walking or hiking is a great low-impact exercise that can be adapted for winter. Make sure to choose well-maintained paths, wear proper footwear with good traction, and be cautious of icy surfaces. A fairly inexpensive investment is a trekking pole with an ice pick for extra security. If you're feeling adventurous, explore local trails with a furry (or human) friend – just be sure to dress appropriately for the weather and let someone know where you're headed if you trek out alone.

4. Join a Winter Fitness Class:

Many fitness and community centers offer winter fitness classes. From indoor cycling to yoga, these classes provide a structured and social environment for staying active. Check local listings for winter-specific classes that align with your fitness goals and preferences. The Jonathan Bowman Center for Enrichment in St. Albans or the Riverwalk Center in Newport are each great options with a wide variety of classes catering to all ages and experience levels. Many of the classes offered at the Bowman Center are sponsored by the Silver Sneakers Program for those 65+ with a Medicare Advantage plan, the classes are FREE - there is no reason not to check them out!

5. Shovel Snow with Purpose:

Turn a mundane winter chore into a calorie-burning workout by shoveling snow with purpose. Focus on using proper body mechanics, engage your core, take breaks as needed, and HYDRATE. Shoveling can be an excellent full-body workout while keeping your driveway clear. Those with known cardiac conditions must be mindful of moving heavy snow, avoiding lifting heavy loads altogether if possible, and if one must do so, move it in smaller scoops with frequent rest breaks.

6. Stay Hydrated and Dress Appropriately:

Whether you're braving the cold outdoors or working out inside, staying hydrated is crucial. The cold weather can sometimes mask the feeling of thirst, so be mindful of your water intake. Additionally, dressing in layers is key to staying comfortable during winter workouts. Choose moisture-wicking fabrics to keep sweat away from your body and invest in thermal layers for added warmth. Peel off layers during outdoor activities as you warm up but before you begin to sweat if possible, layer back up as needed.

Conclusion:

Don't let the winter blues hinder your commitment to an active lifestyle. Embrace the seasonal changes and discover new ways to stay fit and healthy. Whether you're hitting the slopes, breaking a sweat at home, or joining a winter fitness class (and making some new friends), there are plenty of safe and enjoyable options to keep you moving during the colder months. Remember to listen to your body, stay hydrated, and have fun while staying active in winter - luckily, spring will be here before we know it!
